This twin is empathetic and offers much advice to Sam on how to navigate the parts of his life he doesn’t have such a strong grasp on. He often turns to help from his twin: a man that looks just like him that only he can see. He’s cold, distant, and more than a little selfish. But Twin Mirror is an unabashed success at weaving its primary themes into the core of all aspects of its narrative. The story is fairly trite and the characters, while defined enough to carry the plot forward, aren’t all that interesting. What follows requires Sam to think hard about what’s truly important to him as he chases threads that could unravel the quiet tranquility that the town’s residents are familiar with. The daughter of the deceased, Joan, informs Sam that her father’s death may not be as cut-and-dry as it seems and implores him to look into it. But when a close friend dies, he reluctantly finds himself back again to pay his respects. Sam Higgs is an investigative journalist who swore to never return to his small, insulated home town. Twin Mirror is predicated on what I like to refer to as a default storyline. The game may not be all that long or have the most original premise or setting, but the questions it asks are well worth pondering, regardless of if we appreciate the answers it reflects. The trails we blaze may leave brush fires in our wake that threaten to grow and spread to the surrounding areas. Is it truly better to seek out truth or comfort? Much like reality, Twin Mirror offers no easy answers. New PS5, PS4 Games This Week (27th March to 2nd April) The same can be said of most characters in Twin Mirror, actually. And while one more twist provides the protagonist with a physical manifestation of his sub-conscience, it’s more annoying than helpful. It’s neat, but nothing you haven’t seen before in past Sherlock Holmes titles. Sam enters a sort of alternate reality where he can piece together crime scenes to gain a better understanding. The game plays out like your typical DONTNOD experience with environments to rummage through and a handful of dialogue choices to make - affecting the narrative and ending in the process - with a somewhat interesting use case for the Mind Palace. It gets to the point where the plot lacks any coherent sense. The problem is that the game takes such great strides during and in between the scenes making up the five-hour playthrough that it can be tough to keep up with what’s going on. This leads him down the path of having killed someone in a drunken state, so now it’s his job to try and clear his name and investigate the suspicious claims surrounding his buddy’s death. After having too much to drink at the wake, he wakes up the following day to find his shirt covered in blood. Protagonist Sam Higgs has returned to his former home of Basswood to commemorate the passing of best friend Nick. The developer’s latest effort, titled Twin Mirror, is the worst of the lot as a nonsensical story, flat and uninteresting characters, and poor performance riddle this narrative-based adventure with flaws. The more games DONTNOD Entertainment puts out, the more it feels like Life Is Strange really was just a fluke.
